Can dependent tax exemption be claimed on pro rata basis?

hi, i am on H4 visa right now and my spouse on H1. last year we claimed me as dependent and got the tax relief. i got my H1 this year and will be effective from oct 2008. can we claim me as a dependent on my spouse for the 1st 9 months of the year for taxation purposes? Since both of you meet the substantial presence test, your choices are to file 1 Married Filing Joint return together using, the married deduction ($10900) and 2 exemptions or 2 Married Filing Separately returns using the separate deduction ($5450) and 1 exemption.

There would be no prorating.

You cannot split an exemption. You either take it 100% or not at all.
